Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in our bodies. It is produced in abundance by the organ liver. The rest of the cholesterol in the body comes in from the food we intake. Cholesterol doesn't stay in a stationary phase, it travels across the blood in the form of packets called lipoproteins.Cholesterols are of two types:Low-density lipoprotein (LDL): LDL is harmful to our body. It can build up in our arteries and form fatty waxy plaques.High-density lipoprotein (HDL): HDL is good cholesterol. It is healthy and keeps your body fit and fine by transporting the excess cholesterol out of the arteries into the liver that removes it from the body.Harmful effects of LDLCholesterol is required by the body but not in a large amounts. Excess of all vital things/products always leads to a problem, let it be alone health-wise.Cardiovascular diseasesHigh LDL can cause damage to the arteries, stroke and heart disease. Hence, it is necessary to have a regular cholesterol checkup. The fatty and waxy cholesterol gets accumulated in the arteries, clogging them and making them hard. This ailment is called atherosclerosis. Since the arteries have hardened, blood flow isn't easy anymore. The heart requires more pressure to push the blood across. As time passes by, plaques build up in the arteries leading to heart diseases.Endocrine systemHormone producing glands produce hormones such as estrogen, testosterone, and cortisol with the help of cholesterol. An imbalance in the hormonal level may cause cholesterol problems.Nervous systemCholesterol is an essential component of the human brain. About 25% of the cholesterol is present in the brain alone. It helps in the development and protection of the nerve cells that in turn help the brain in communicating with the body.A nominal amount of cholesterol is required by the brain. But if excess of it is present, it may lead to stroke and cause mental illness such as Alzheimer'sDigestive systemCholesterol is necessary for the production of bile. Bile helps in breaking down the food and absorbing nutrients in your intestines. But, if the cholesterol level in the bile is in excess, it may form crystals and stones in the gall bladder that are very painful to deal.

Arthritis is the inflammation of the joints in the body that occurs as one age. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis. OA is commonly known as wear and tear arthritis. It involves the breakdown of cartilage in any joint of the body. OA is commonly seen in hip, spine and knee joints that are the weight-bearing joints. It's less commonly seen in other joints.Cartilage is a firm, rubbery material present at the ends of the bones. The cartilage helps in shock absorption and to reduce friction in the joints. But, in osteoarthritis, the cartilage becomes rigid and loses its elasticity making the joints, cartilage and bones prone to damage.Over time, the cartilage may wear off in certain joints reducing the shock absorption ability. As time passes by, ligaments and tendons may stretch causing pain, eventually making the bones rub to each other.Who can get osteoarthritis?Osteoarthritis often affects aged people. But, you may find young individuals affected with OA too. It may be due to an underlying health condition such as joint injury, stress and or overuse of that joint. Studies show women are more prone to arthritis than men.SymptomsJoint pain, especially on movementStiffness after restingBony enlargements in the middle or end joints of fingersJoint inflammationCausesHereditary: One of the most common causes of the illness is hereditary.ObesityInjuryJoint overuseOther diseasesTreatmentThe treatment of OA depends on factors such as; age, the position of the joint page, medical history and severity. It can be treated by exercise, weight loss if needed, physiotherapy, hot and cold massage on the affected joint, removal of joint fluid, induction of medicine into the cartilage, use of stretcher and crutches to avoid direct pressure on the ones. If no treatment works, the only option left is surgery.

Diabetic patients are more prone for health diseases as their immunity is weak. Amputation of limbs is due to; Peripheral Artery Disease(PAD)and Diabetic neuropathy.PAD narrows done the arteries which carry blood to the foot. This narrowness may block the blood causing infection, ulcers and pus formation. It also causes injuries or bleeding to heal later than the usual.Neuropathy is the nerve damage. High blood sugar levels lead to neuropathy where the blood vessels get damaged completely, this includes those of hands, foot and legs. If a diabetic is suffering from neuropathy, they may not feel any sense, heat, cold, feeling etc. on the foot or any other part of the body since the nerves are totally dead. This means, the person is unable to feel anything, even if they have hit their leg on to something or even if they carrying a huge rock on the foot. This causes serious infection called gangrene which results in amputation.

Tips to prevent cavities:Brushing: Brush your teeth with a good fluoride toothpaste. Brush at least twice a day or after every mealMouth wash: If you are prone to cavities, your doctor would recommend you to use a fluoride mouthwash.Visit the dentist: Visit the dentist frequently to avoid any severe tooth damage.Dental sealants: Consider using dental sealant for young school going children to strengthen the teeth. A sealant is a protective coating applied on the back side of the chewing teeth. It helps in protecting the enamel of the teeth by not allowing it to deposit any food, hence formation of plaque and acid are out of the question.Fluoride water: Fluoride is needed to maintain a good oral hygiene. Hence drink water with fluoride in it.Avoid snacking: Avoid snacking and sipping as it activates the bacteria in the mouth which destroys the enamel of the teeth. Eat healthy snacks such as fruits, vegetables, unsweetened coffee and tea instead.Consider fluoride treatments: If your teeth are at a high risk of damage due to the deficiency of fluoride, your dentist would recommend you to use a custom tray which is rich in fluoride.
